The Albion steam-powered Mills were the first great factory in London, an industrial wonder of the time. But the mills were widely resented by millers and workers whose livelihood they threatened.
It is thought that these may be the 'dark, satanic mills' of William Blake's 'Jerusalem'.
In 1791 the Albion Mills burned to the ground. Arson was strongly suspected... Crowds gathered to celebrate the Mills' destruction, ballads were written and sung on the spot…
