Part One: Days of Hope
This pamphlet (part one of two) examines the
support given by Bristol socialists to the rise of
'New Unionism', as worker militancy in Bristol
exploded between September and December
1889. Drawing on many new sources it presents
a detailed picture of strikes in the city during this
period. A notable feature of these strikes was the
involvement of women workers and the leading
part played by two middle class women, Miriam
Daniell and Helena Born. Formerly members
of the Bristol Women's Liberal Association, by
the autumn of 1889 they had become active
in the Bristol Socialist Society; and it was the
involvement and influence of this organisation
in the events of the upsurge that added to the
concern of employers and the city's ruling elite.
