Public and Communal Burials at the City of London Cemetery from 1856 to the Present
Published by Leyton and Leytonstone Historical Society
This is the story of those hundreds of thousands of Londoners who have shared communal or public burial sites in the cemetery but who in large part remain anonymous.
It began with the many thousands of bodies moved from over-full inner city churchyards and reinterred in the cemetery grounds but also takes in cholera victims, Newgate murderers, the dead from orphanages and religious orders and many of the victims, civilian and military, who died in the two world wars. And of course it includes the huge number of ordinary people too poor to afford a private
grave who were buried communally.
